Edge Announcement – Marc-Antoine Pion

Congratulations to Marc-Antoine Pion (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend Harvard University in the fall of 2015!  Marc-Antoine joined the Edge program in the fall of 2012 and was our first ever out-of-province Edge member.  The 5’11, 190lbs, Montreal Quebec native began his lacrosse career at College Jean-de-Brebeuf in grade 7.  Since then Marc-Antoine has grown into a very solid defender who has the ability to shut down  opposing offensive threats.  “We were fortunate to have had Marc Antoine for a season.  He showed his ability and tenacity each time he touched the field.  He really only has 1 speed and 1 level of intensity.  This proved to be his biggest asset, as many opposing attackmen and middies did not like to play against him.  He will make a great defender at Harvard” said Edge 2015 head coach Marc Burton.  Pion is currently enrolled at IMG academy.  We would like to wish Marc-Antoine the best of luck at Harvard both in the classroom and on the field.  We have no doubt that he will be a great asset to the Harvard defence for years to come!

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

I first began playing lacrosse in my hometown of Montreal at College Jean-de-Brebeuf in Grade 7. I am currently enrolled at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and play for their Varsity and National lacrosse teams. Before attending IMG, I played for the Westmount Lynx in Montreal, and Edge.

Why did you choose to attend Harvard?

I strongly believe that Harvard is the only university where I could truly develop not only as an athlete, but also as a student, and most importantly a person. No other school can offer an academic reputation like Harvard. The staff and the players are very welcoming, and the facilities are without equal.

What are you looking forward to most at Harvard??

I’m looking forward to playing at the next level, and going to college at one of the best schools in the world.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

Beyond NCAA lacrosse, I really want to make a difference in the lacrosse community in Montreal, where lacrosse isn’t as popular as it is, for example, in Ontario. I want to help the sport grow, and pass on my passion to the younger or less experienced players.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I joined the Edge program in the fall of 2012. It was an enriching experience for me because I got to play with one of the best clubs in North America. I was the first player from Quebec to ever play with Edge, and I believe that is very important because lots of incredible players are developing in Quebec, and it’s paramount they have an opportunity like I did. I heard about the program after the All Canada Games in 2012, and as soon as the opportunity to play for Edge presented itself, I knew I wanted to play for the program.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

I think that the most important pieces of advice I could give to future Edge players about the recruitment process would be to take their time, and work hard on every aspect of recruitment, especially academics.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

I really enjoyed playing at the MVP Tournament in 2013 because it was my first time playing with the team, and Edge went undefeated in the tournament.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I consider myself an athletic defenseman. I am not particularly big compared to defensemen in the NCAA, but I think that through my hard work on the field and in the weight room, I compensate for my lack in height. Growing up, I looked up to all the players on the McGill University lacrosse team because they play the best level available in Montreal.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks

I would like to firstly thank my mom for how much time she has invested in helping me reach my NCAA goal. I am incredibly grateful for everything she’s done for me. Also, I would like to thank the people who initiated me to lacrosse: Phil Lalonde and Jacques Boisvert. I would also like to thank Tim Murdoch from McGill for always having been there to help me during the recruiting process and teaching me advanced principles. Being the first French Canadian player to commit to play D1 lacrosse is something very big for me, and I truly believe that paving way for the future generations of lacrosse players in Quebec is something of great importance.

Edge Announcement – Matthew Gaudet

Congratulations to Matthew Gaudet (Edge 2015/16) on his recent commitment to attend Syracuse University in the fall of 2016!  The 6’1, 195lbs mid/attackman has been with the Edge program for 4 years now and has developed into a dominant all around player.  “Gaudet is a strong powerful player that can either go around you or through you.  Matthew possesses a heavy midrange shot with the skill set to either be a two way middie or an attackman” Said Edge 2015 Head Coach Adam Gardner.  Gaudet began his lacrosse career at the age of 4 playing in the Hamilton Minor Lacrosse Association.  Gaudet is currently enrolled at Salisbury Prep School and was drafted first overall by the Six Nations Arrows Jr.A squad this year.  We would like to wish Matthew the best of luck at Syracuse both in the classroom and on the field!  We have no doubt that he will continue to develop and succeed at the DI level.

We had a chance to catch up with Matt

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

I first began playing lacrosse with the Hamilton Lacrosse Association at the age of 4. I am currently enrolled at Salisbury School playing with the Varsity lacrosse team and will be playing with Sweet Lax 2016 this summer. I was a member of the EDGE Elite 2015/2016 team and most recently the CNY Roadhawks 2015 team.

Why did you choose to attend Syracuse?

I chose to attend Syracuse based on the coaching staff. The coaching staff is exceptional, Coach Desko along with his staff really know they’re stuff. Not just that, but they’re really great people too. Another thing that helped with my selection is the communications and media program they offer, which is one of the best in the country. As well, the athletic facilities and the privileges that Syracuse has to offer their lacrosse players are out of this world. Lastly, it’s close to home and it’s always nice to be close to where you came from.

What are you looking forward to most at Syracuse??

I’m really looking forward to being a part of one of the best lacrosse programs in the country. It will really up my knowledge on the game and help me improve on every aspect necessary. I’m also really excited to just be an Orangemen and experience everything that Syracuse has to offer.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

My future ambitions beyond college lacrosse is to become a professional lacrosse player, in either or both box and field. I also plan to become a lacrosse coach and give back to others what my coaches have taught me about this incredible game which has gotten me to where I am today.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

My experience with EDGE was a really fun time and extremely helpful on improving my athletics and academics. The program really benefited me in the recruiting process and pushed to make sure colleges would take an interest in me. EDGE helped me gain a lot of knowledge and skills that I still acquire today, on and off the field. It really teaches you how to become a gentlemen. I heard about the program from former coach Pete Follows who really saw a future in the game for me and knew that EDGE would help just that.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

My advice is to always do your very best on and off the field, because most colleges won’t take a second look if you’re doing poorly in the classroom. You should always contact schools and inform them the tournaments and showcases you’ll be attending and if they’re there, I’m sure they’ll have a look at you. Always keep in contact with schools and keep your options open to ANY possibilities. If one school doesn’t work out, keep your head up and move on. Everybody fails before they achieve success.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My favourite memory playing with EDGE would have to be the Dick’s Tournament of Champions where we finished in 2nd place. It was a well ran tournament with great people and very talented players too.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I’d describe myself as an unselfish and extremely hardworking player who always works to be the best. I’d say I’m a strong dodger who has the ability to see the back of the net or see the open man for a nice pass. Growing up, I looked up to Cameron Mann, the very talented former EDGE player who currently plays for the Colorado Mammoth. I would compare myself to Cody Jamieson of the Rochester Knighthawks because he may not be the strongest or the fastest, but with hard work he manages to get it done, which I think is very similar to myself.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks, and any additional details that you would like included in the story (parents names, high school attended, credit to any coaches, etc)

I would like to start off by thanking the EDGE lacrosse program who really helped me become the person and player I am today.

I’d like to thank Pete Follows for believing in me and getting me back into competitive lacrosse, the EDGE lacrosse program and everything behind the scenes. I really wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for him.

I’d like to thank my Roadhawks coaches Mike Stagnitta and Kristy Kimball in the recruiting process and a big one, my commitment to Syracuse. Couldn’t have done it without their help.

Another thank you to Kevin Martin of Sweet Lax who was a huge addition towards my commitment by originally getting me in touch with Syracuse.

Lastly, my family. For all the support they’ve given me and the time and money spent going to all these lacrosse events as well as any other event I’ve taken part in. They’ve been there every step of the way in this journey called life and I know they will continue to do so.

Edge Announcement – Ciaron Costello

Congratulations to Ciaron Costello (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend Robert Morris University in the fall of 2016!  Ciaron has been with the Edge program 4 years now and has developed into a very solid defender who specializes in getting tough ground balls.  Costello also has the ability to push the ball up the field and create fast breaks for his offence.”Ciaron is a quick and intelligent defender who possesses strong stick skills and who can push the ball in transition.  Ciaron competes on both sides of the ball and is a great teammate.  It was a pleasure to coach Ciaron during the past few seasons and watch his growth into a legit DI prospect” said Edge President and Coach Stu Brown.    The 5’10, 160lbs, Toronto, Ontario native began his lacrosse career at the age of 4 playing in the Mimico Minor Lacrosse Association.   Ciaron is currently enrolled at St. Michaels College while also playing for the Mimico Mountaineers Jr. B squad during the box season.  We would like to wish Ciaron the best of luck both in the classroom and on the field!  We have no doubt that Ciaron will excel at the division I level with Robert Morris.

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

I first began playing lacrosse when I was 4 for Mimico. Currently I am playing with St.Michaels College for field and plan on playing JrB for Mimico in the box season. Through my whole minor lacrosse career I played for Mimico and Edge for field as well as being at St.Mikes since grade 7.

Why did you choose to attend RMU?

I chose to attend RMU because it had everything I was looking for in a school. Great lacrosse program great campus I liked all the guys on the team I got a chance to meet and thought the coaches were great as well. A big part of the decision for me was also finding a program at the school that I will look forward to studying during my time at RMU.

What are you looking forward to most at RMU??

The part I am looking forward to most at Robert Morris is just living the life of a D1 athlete. It is something I have wanted to do my whole life and can’t wait to do it.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

My future ambitions beyond NCAA lax would be to become a graphic designer through media arts which is what I intent to major in at RMU

Ciaron Costello #7 With St. Michaels College

Ciaron Costello #7 With St. Michaels College

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I joined the Edge program when I was 12. I heard about it from guys on my club team at Mimico and wanted to go out for a tryout myself. Originally I was trying out as a middie but I was changed to a longpole my first try out by Dean French and I will be forever grateful to him for that because I haven’t looked back since. Throughout the years with edge I’ve had some of the best times of my life playing at different tourneys in the states and made some great friends and I will always thank edge for those experiences.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

Some advice I have for future edge players is just to always give it your all no matter where you are playing because you never know who’s watching.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My best memory with edge would definitely be my first time at dicks tournament of champions in the semi finals. We were tied after 4 and it went into sudden death OT. My goalie at the time Errol Spring asked me if it was sudden death and I didn’t know myself that it was at the time so I told him no. First draw of OT the other team comes down on a 4 on 3 and we slide and Errol comes out of the net to slide thinking it’s not sudden death and we get the ball, quick clear up the field ,and score to win the game and advance to the finals. Definitely my favourite memory with Edge and I will never forget it.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I’d say that the type of player I am is the type of D that never gives up. I commit to my slides and if there’s a loose ball any where near me I will not stop until that ball is in my stick or the stick of my team mates. I also love to run the ball up the field. Growing up I always looked up to Brian Shanahan because he is one of my Dads best friends and without him my Dad wouldn’t have be introduced to the game and I wouldn’t have been either. I look up to Brian Shanahan because he introduced me to the game taught me everything I needed to know through coaching and his camps that I attended and was a counsellor at in later years and I based my game on those lessons even to this day

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks, and any additional details that you would like included in the story (parents names, high school attended, credit to any coaches, etc)

I would definitely like to give a BIG thanks to my dad. Without him I couldn’t have done any of this. I did a little math and me and him have done about 23000 kms of driving and 15000 kms of flying throughout my lacrosse career and he was always so eager to do it and loved to watch me play which I will always be grateful for. My mom and sister were also always there for me being the best cheer team anyone could ask for. From my first coach John Mac and coaches like Tink, Kevin Macalear , Dean French, Peter Follows , Pete Debrone , Stu Brown, Jonny Grimes and my High School coach Alex Frescura they have all been instrumental to where I have made it today and I will always be grateful to them and couldn’t have done it without them. n

Edge Announcement – Jackson Suboch

Congratulations to Jackson Suboch (Edge 2016) on his recent commitment to attend the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  The 6’4, 180lbs, Etobicoke native has been with the Edge program for 4+ years now and has developed into a strong shut down defensemen who has the ability to scoop up just about every ground ball and transition it up the field.  “Jackson is a big strong and menacing defender who always works hard and demands the same effort from his teammates.  I look forward to watching his success at the next level” said Edge 2016 head coach Adam Gardner.  Suboch began his lacrosse career at the age of 5 and developed his game in the Mimico Minor Lacrosse Association.  Jackson is currently playing at Upper Canada College along with our Edge 2016 squad.  We would like to wish Jackson the best of luck down at UMass Amherst both in the classroom and on the field.  We have no doubt that Jackson will be a key component to a very good Division I program.

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing? Feel free to mention any previous lacrosse teams/clubs

I first began lacrosse when I was five years old. A good friend of my dad Dean French saw me play goalie in hockey and asked my dad after the game if I ever considered playing lacrosse. I eventually enrolled in Mimico house league lacrosse and fell in love with the game. I’ve been with Mimico my entire life. I feel incredibly lucky to have been surrounded with friends that are, as far as I’m considered, the best guys in the world. I’ll remember the fun I had with Mimico forever.

Why did you choose to attend UMass Amherst?

I chose to attend UMass Amherst because it was everything that I was looking for in a University. It’s kind of hard to explain my exact reason for choosing UMass, other than the fact that I down right love everything about the school. A great campus, fantastic facilities, an unreal coaching staff, co-ed dorms, and a good group of guys on the team are just some of the reasons that I chose UMass Amherst.

Jackson Suboch

Jackson Suboch

What are you looking forward to most at UMass Amherst??

I’m definitely looking forward to the food (ranked #3 in the country).

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

I’m not quite sure. I’d like to come back to Mimico and coach either box or field with some old friends, but it’s so far off that I can’t quite comment on it yet. My next personal goal would be to make u19 team Canada.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I first heard about EDGE when I was playing novice field under Dean French for Mimico. He encouraged a bunch of us to try-out and I eventually made the team. My experience with EDGE has been pretty awesome. I’ve made a lot of new friends, met guys like Jordan Macintosh, Stu Brown and Alan Tsang that have helped me a lot in the recruiting process, and eventually did what I set out to do which was get recruited to a good D1 school. I’m very thankful for the opportunities EDGE has presented to me.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

Some advice I have for future EDGE players is advocate for yourself, have good marks in school (most important), and work hard (guys like Stu will do everything he can do for you if you show hard work).

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

Probably the first Dicks Tournament of Champions I went too with EDGE 2015. It was a blast. The boys battled hard through the weekend. We inevitably lost in the final to FCA National- but in our defence FCA was a couple years older!

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I’m an in your face, tough defenseman (which is why I was recruited by UMass), that doesn’t give you a lot of space and isn’t afraid to play dirty. In my opinion, anything in front of the net is “fair game”- with or without the ball.

When I was growing up I didn’t really look up to anyone (not that I thought I was better than others), but maybe that is a good thing. In my opinion, why copy someone/model yourself after their game if it doesn’t fit YOUR type of game.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks, and any additional details that you would like included in the story (parents names, high school attended, credit to any coaches, etc)

First of all, I’d like to thank my mom, dad and Sydney (Syd). They were supportive and patient- whether it was my forgetting my stuff at home before practice or late night drives back home after box, they were there all the way. Secondly, I’d like to thank my coaches Stu Brown, Pete Follows, Dean French, Max Perren, Pete Debrone and Jonny Grimes for being true beauties and keeping it real. I’d like to thank Mimico Lacrosse for the support as well. Finally, I’d like to thank my teammates. Whether it was EDGE or Mimico- you boys were the biggest gems anyone could ask for. Thanks for putting up with me and staying prime.

Edge Announcement – Brittany Fenney

Congratulations to Brittany Fenney (Edge U19) on her recent commitment to attend the University of Detriot Mercy. The Mississauga, Ontario native began her lacrosse career freshman year of high school before eventually moving to rep, to play for the Mississauga Trilliums.  Fenney played for Edge during the 2011 and 2012 seasons and is currently playing with the women’s Brampton Senior Excelsiors.  Edge U19 coach Jess Lee had this to say about brittany, “Brittany is a strong transition player.  Her presence on the field was an asset to our line up and a threat to our opponent”.  We couldn’t agree more with Coach Lee.  We would like to wish Brittany the best of luck at the University of Detroit Mercy both in the classroom and on the field.  We have no doubt that she will be a key component to their program!

Brittany Feeney Signing letter of Intent

Brittany Feeney Signing letter of Intent

We had a chance to catch up with Brittany.

1.    Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

I began playing lacrosse in grade 9 only at my highschool. After the second highschool season I decided to try rep, so I went and tried out for the Mississauga Trilliums. I played with the Mississauga Trilliums for 2 seasons (grade 10 and 11). For my final year of U19 I went to Mimico. Last summer I played on the Brampton Senior women’s team. During the fall of 2011 and 2012 I played with the EDGE elite U19 women’s team, while also playing on the Everest Academy team fall of 2012. I am currently not enrolled in any school and I am just working full time.

2. Why did you choose to attend Detroit Mercy?

I chose to attend Detroit-Mercy because the coach made me feel welcome from the moment I met her. I love the campus and the fact that it isn’t too far from home so I can come home on some weekends to see family and friends. There are also a few Canadians, including my former EDGE teammate Kelsi Pritchard, already on the team, which is awesome.

Brittany Fenney #6

Brittany Fenney #6

3. What are you looking forward to most at Detroit Mercy??

I am most looking forward to playing division 1 lacrosse while being able to get a good education. I am also looking forward to playing with the awesome girls on the team.

4. What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

I am not exactly sure what I’d like to do after playing NCAA lacrosse. I plan to continue playing lacrosse while pursuing a career in physical therapy or nursing. Playing on team Canada would is a goal as well.

5. Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I joined the EDGE team in the fall of 2011, and again in the fall of 2012. I found out about the EDGE program by attending a summer clinic which was run by EDGE.

Playing on the EDGE team really helped me develop as a player and also helped me break out of my shell. I was very shy and was really unsure about what to do on the field, but playing on EDGE and watching the higher skilled girls really changed the way I play and the amount of confidence I have.

6. What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

Start as early as you can. I did not start my recruitment process until late grade 11/early grade 12 and that made everything difficult and somewhat rushed. Also plan to write your SATs multiple times and as early as you can. Make sure you stay in touch with the college coaches via email.

7. Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

Before EDGE I had never travelled out of Ontario or stayed in a hotel, so playing in the midatlantic tournament in 2011 included a lot of firsts. The other girls on the team and the coaches were very supportive.

Brittany Fenney Playing with Edge

Brittany Fenney Playing with Edge

8. Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

My style of play is still changing because I am still learning. I love to play midfield because it involves playing offense, defence and transition. Scoring is my favourite thing to do, like most players, but I also enjoy making movements around the field that will help lead to goals being scored by my teammates. Even though I like scoring and being on the offensive side, I still enjoy playing great team and individual defense and causing turn overs.

When I first started playing lacrosse on my highschool team, I looked up to our star player Dana Skyvington. I liked how it seemed like she could get past any defender and score like crazy. Another player I was inspired by was Danielle Spencer who playing for Northwestern.

I have no idea who I would compare myself to now since I believe I am changing more now than I ever have before.

9. Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks.

I would like to thank my parents (Matt Fenney and Jennifer Bousche) and my grandmother (Marg Matthews) for the time and money they spent and for driving me everywhere for games and tournaments. And to my dad especially for the lectures and long talks on the way home from games and tournaments about what I could have done differently, which were annoying at the time, but now I realize the importance of those talks. Without their support I wouldn’t be where I am today. I would also like to thank Jennifer Boyer, my highschool coach, for getting me interested in lacrosse in the first place. Jess Lee and Barb Boyes were awesome as well and knew exactly what to say when I wasn’t feeling confident in myself. Without them and the EDGE team I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Edge Announcement – Eric Radbourne

Congratulations to Eric Radbourne (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend the University of Vermont!  Eric has been with the edge program for just over a year now and we have had the pleasure to watch him become a dominant midfielder in his short time with us.  The 6’0, 180lbs, Guelph, Ontario native uses his size and speed to beat his defender one-on-one and become either a feeder or finisher.  Radbourne also has an excellent shot on the run which makes it very difficult for teams to defend him.  Eric began his lacrosse career in the Guelph Minor Lacrosse Association and is now currently enrolled at Trinity-Pawling Prep School in New York.   We have no doubt that Eric will be a key contributor for the Catamounts at the Division I level.  We would like to wish Eric the best of luck both in the classroom and on the field!

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I joined the Edge program last fall. I was introduced to the program by many teammates who were already a part of it.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

The advice that I have for any future Edge players is to keep your grades up in school. Also give your best effort any time you step on the field.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My favourite memory playing with the Edge program was the Gait Cup tournament. We got to stay in the college dorms with our team and get a feel for what college will be like. It is also a great bonding experience for the team and brings everyone closer together.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks.

I would like to thank my parents for spending their time and money taking me to all of the tournaments and events. I would also like to thank the Edge program and coach Marc Burton for developing me as a field player and preparing me for NCAA lacrosse.

Congratulations to Patrick Dehueck (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend Mercer University! Patrick joined our Edge program 3 years ago and has developed into an exceptional two-way midfielder.  “Initially he was viewed as a high end D middie, but over the last 3 years, he has developed into a legitimate two-way middie that can put the ball in the net and be a part of any teams offense.  His tenacious play and willingness to improve will make him a key contributor at Mercer.  Mercer got a terrific young man from a terrific family” said Edge 2015 head coach Marc Burton.  The Burlington, Ontario native began his lacrosse career in the Burlington Minor Lacrosse Association and is now currently enrolled at the Hill Academy.  DeHueck is also currently playing for the Oakville Buzz Jr.B squad.  We would like to wish Patrick the best of luck at Mercer and have no doubt that he will be very successful at the Division I level.

I am looking forward to the overall university experience and playing Division I lacrosse.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

The recruiting process can be stressful at times but you need to find the best fit for you and not worry about what everyone else is doing.  Furthermore, remember that academics are just as important as athletics.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My favorite memory of Edge would be the Gait Cup tournament.  Staying in the dorms with the team was a great experience.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I would describe myself as a two-way midfielder.  I think all The Hill Academy coaches weer and are great players to look up to.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks, and any additional details that you would like included in the story (parents names, high school attended, credit to any coaches, etc)

I would like to thank BMLA and all the coaches I have had throughout the years.  As well, I would like to thank Edge and Marc Burton for all their efforts and, my coaches at the Hill Academy.  Most importantly, I would like to thank my parents for making this dream a reality.

Edge Announcement – Ryan Morrison

Congratulations to Ryan Morrison (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.  Ryan has been with the Edge program for little over a year now and has really developed into an offensive threat.  The 5’11, 200lbs Attackmen out of Uxbridge, Ontario has a heavy shot from the outside and can finish in tight as well.  Morrison began his lacrosse career playing in the West Durham Minor Lacrosse association at the tyke level.  Ryan is now currently playing for the Newmarket Redbirds U-19 squad along with our Edge 2015’s.  We would like to wish Ryan the best of luck down at UMASS Lowell both in the classroom and on the field.  We have no doubt that he will be a key component to the brand new Division I program next fall.

Ryan Morrison

Ryan Morrison

We had a chance to catch up with Ryan

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?
I began playing box lacrosse for West Durham Minor Lacrosse in Tyke. In Bantam I moved to Uxbridge and I have just recently finished my last year of Midget for the Uxbridge Enforcers, while also having the opportunity to AP for the Newmarket Saints Jr. C team. Uxbridge has no field program so I have been playing in Newmarket for the past 3 years. I currently play field for the Newmarket Redbirds U-19 team and Edge 2015 team.
Why did you choose to attend UMASS Lowell?
I chose to attend Umass Lowell for a variety of reasons. I felt the school was the a great fit for me athletically and academically. The small class sizes gives me the best opportunity to get a great education. I love the direction and enthusiasm of the coaching staff and I believe that I will develop best as both a lacrosse player and as an individual under their leadership.
Ryan Morrison

Ryan Morrison

What are you looking forward to most at UMASS Lowell??
I am most looking forward to contributing to a new Division 1 lacrosse program, competing against the best lacrosse players in the county, and obtaining an excellent education. I am also looking forward to the entire university experience.
What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?
Beyond playing in the NCAA, I would like to find a successful career in the Sciences/Business field and keep involved with lacrosse for as long as I can, whether it be playing or coaching.
Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?
I joined Edge in the Fall of 2012 and I heard about the program through teammates. Edge has provided me with my first exposure to lacrosse in the US and it has really taught me a lot about the field game. The tournaments we play in are highly competitive and they give us a great chance to get recruited.
What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?
Advice I have for future Edge players is keep your grades up and play your own game. Give 100% every time you step on the field because you never know who is watching.
Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?
Every Edge tournament I played in has been memorable but the UPlax tournament would have to be my favourite. It was the first tournament I played in as an Edge player. Nobody knew each other at the beginning of the tournament but as the weekend went on, our team really bonded and we made friendships that will last a lifetime.
Ryan Morrison

Ryan Morrison

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?
I would describe myself as a finishing attackman with a good shot and good hands. I’m not sure who I would compare myself to now, but growing up I watched players like John Grant Jr, Matt Danowski and Mark Mathews.
Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks.
I would like to thank Edge Lacrosse for helping me throughout the whole recruitment process. Also I would like to thank all of my teammates and coaches over the years, especially Erin Oor for all of his support and everything that he has taught me. Most importantly, I would like to thank my parents for all of their time, effort, and support they have put in to helping me achieve my dream.

Edge Announcement – Hayden Walsh

Congratulations to Hayden Walsh (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend Bellarmine University!  Hayden has been with our Edge program for 7 years now and we have had the opportunity to see him grow and develop into one the best goalies our program has ever produced.  Hayden has the ability to stop the big out side shots along with the in tight ones while minimizing his rebounds.  Walsh also has a tremendous amount of speed and can clear the ball by himself if need be.  Edge Coach Marc Burton had this to say “Hayden is the real deal.  Having coached him for roughly 4 years now, his games has come to new heights.  His work ethic and determination has enabled him to be a difference maker on any team he backstops.  Hayden will do great things at Bellarmine.  We have complete faith that BU is getting a top notch net minder”.  The Burlington, Ont. native grew up playing his lacrosse in the Burlington Minor Lacrosse Association and is now currently enrolled at the Hill Academy competing with their U18 squad. We would like to wish Hayden the best of luck both in the classroom and on the field and have no doubt that he will excel at the next level.

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

I first began playing lacrosse box lacrosse in tyke and then picked up field lacrosse in novice playing for my local Burlington centre. I started out as attack, but then played net when our goalie quit and I haven’t looked back.  I am currently in my second year at The Hill Academy in Vaughan.  I play for their U-18 Prep Team.  I also play for Edge Lacrosse in the summer.

Why did you choose to attend Bellarmine University?

I chose to attend Bellarmine University because for me, it just seemed to stand out from the other schools I visited.  It is a really good fit for what I was looking for.  I wanted a D1 competitive program and a University that offered a great academic program.  I also, very much connected with the coaching staff.  They have great relationships with the team not only on the field but off.  As well, I have the opportunity to come in and play right away…provided that I work hard and earn it, of course. Also the team vibe was incredible.  My recruiting trip truly felt like a team atmosphere and that is exactly what a team needs to have to find success.

Hayden Walsh Team Ontario

Hayden Walsh Team Ontario

What are you looking forward to most at Bellarmine??

At Bellarmine I am most looking forward to becoming a D1 NCAA student athlete.  I have worked hard at lacrosse and school and have always had the goal of playing lacrosse and attending University in the US.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

I’m not sure what will happen after University.  Of course, I would love to play in the MLL, but that is a huge next step.  My next goal is to be successful at the NCAA level by working hard both on the field and in the classroom.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program?

How did you hear about the program?

My experience with Edge Lacrosse has been excellent. I joined the program in grade 6 (2007) and have been a part of the club ever since. I first heard about the program from other players in Burlington who had older brothers playing.  Edge allowed me to take my field game to the next level. The coaches really know the game and push you to strive to do your best at all times.

Hayden Walsh with the Hill Academy

Hayden Walsh with the Hill Academy

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

Don`t be concerned if you are not being heavily recruited and although it’s hard, never get discouraged from the stories about others being committed. If you work hard every day, stay persistent and passionate for the goal of playing NCAA lacrosse then your day will come.  Don’t give up!

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

Every tournament with Edge was great!  Staying in hotels, playing a game you love, hanging with your friends…there is no bad part of it.  But if I had to pick one, it would be this last year at NSCLA.  We played really well and made it to the semi’s which was good as the competition was very tough.  We really pulled together as a team.  As well, there were lots of recruiters there, so it was a good venue to be at.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I like to be challenged.  I guess any goalie does…hanging around the net without a shot would be boring!  I love to stop the ball and then go for a run. But I also very much appreciate my long poles and a middie that I can know I can clear to. When I was younger, I followed John Galloway (Syracuse).  He was an amazing ball stopper and great to watch and learn from.  Now I watch a lot of goalies and see their different styles and try to learn from them. As far as whom I would compare myself to now…that’s a hard one.  I’d be happy to be compared to any NCAA D1 goalie.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks

I would like to thank my parents first as they were the ones who allowed me to chase my dream of playing lacrosse at a US University.  There are also many coaches who have helped me develop.  From Edge, coaches Marc Burton, Adam Gardner, Adam Lukanchoff and Serge Bianchin and from The Hill Academy, my coaches Brodie Merrill, Patrick Merrill and Merrick Thomson.  Thanks also to the great team mates I’ve had…it’s been a blast!

Congratulations to Conner Overstrom (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend Pfieffer University!  Conner has been with the Edge program for just over a year now and has developed into an exceptional attackman.  “Conner came into the program a year and half ago with strong potential.  He always showed himself to be a strong finishing attackman and has over time showed that he possesses a physical and gritty upside that separates him from many others.  He will really help a rapidly improving program at Pfieffer” said Edge Coach Marc Burton.  The Niagara, Ont. native began his lacrosse career playing in the Niagara Minor Lacrosse Association and is now currently playing with the U19 Niagara Raiders and the Niagara Thunderhawks Jr.B squad.  We have no doubt that Conner will excel at Pfieffer and be a great addition to their offense.  We would like to wish Conner the best of luck both on the field and in the classroom!

Congratulations to Patrick Walsh (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend the University of Detroit Mercy!  Patrick joined the Edge program 3 years ago and has developed into an exceptional midfielder with a knack for finding the back of the net.  Edge Coach Marc Burton had this to say “We first brought Patrick in on our inaugural 2nd team because we thought he had the potential to continue to improve and work his way up.  Patrick not only exceeded our expectation, but rather became a player we looked at for to lead by example as a dominant offensive player with a terrific work ethic.  His continued improvement and will to always get better will make him a strong contributor at the NCAA Division I level.  Detroit Mercy got a terrific player and person”.  The Dundas, Ontario native began his lacrosse career in the Hamilton Minor Lacrosse Association and is currently playing for the Hamilton Bengals Jr.B squad along with our Edge 2015’s.  Standing at 6’3, 185lbs Walsh is a dangerous middie and we have no doubt that he will be a key asset for the Titans.  We would like to wish Patrick the best of luck in the classroom and on the field!

Advice that I have for future Edge players is to get your grades up, play your game and never give up. Give your 100% every time you throw on that Edge jersey.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

One of my favourite memories playing with edge is the Gait Cup tournament. You get to room with all of your teammates in a college dorm and play some great lacrosse. It brings everyone closer and gives you a little taste of what college is going to be like.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I am a more offensive player then defense, I like to put the ball in the net. Growing up i looked up to Dave Andreychuck, a hockey and lacrosse player from Hamilton.

Congratulations to Pat Shea (Edge 2015) on his commitment to attend the University of Richmond in the fall of 2015!  Pat began playing for our Edge program when he was only 10 years old playing for our U11 team.  Since then Pat has grown into one of the most versatile middies we have ever seen.  “I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Patty in both Edge and Oakville Minor Lacrosse.  Pat is a leader by example.  He gives his team everything he’s got every time he steps on the field.  Very few players get as many ground balls as Pat.  He is one of the purest finishers around the net that I have ever seen.  Pat’s strong skill set, tenacious work ethic and incredible character will make him an impact at the Division I level” said Edge 2015 Coach Marc Burton.  Pat is a product of the Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association and is currently playing for the Oakville Buzz Jr.B squad.  Shea is also currently enrolled at Woodberry Forest School in preparation for Richmond.  We would like to wish Pat the best of luck in the classroom and on the field and have no doubt that he will have a great career at Richmond!

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I began playing Edge Lacrosse when I was on the U11 team with the green uniforms. I heard about the program from my brother  has he was on one of the first Edge teams.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

Advice I can give to future Edgle players would be to take care of your work at school and always give 100% on and off the field and to forget all the coaches watching you and just play your game because you only need to impress one coach not all of them.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My favourite memory while playing Edge Lacrosse were the bus rides to tournaments because you bond with your teammates and make friends for a lifetime.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I consider myself to be a feeder and inside finisher. I feel like I have see the field well and that helps with feeding the cutters and also with back door cuts to get open. While growing up I looked up to John Tavares (The one in the NHL) as I used to always go and watch him play box when he played for the Mississauga Tomahawks. A player I would compare myself to now would have to be Turner Evans because he is not the biggest guy but finds ways to get inside and finish.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks.

I would like to thank my parents for all their time and effort they put in to getting me where I am today. I would also like to thank my sibling, friends and all the coaches I have had in my lacrosse career for helping make me the person and lacrosse player I am today.

Congratulations to Brent Noseworthy (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend Cornell University in the fall of 2014!  Brent began playing lacrosse at the age of four and is a product of the Burlington Minor Lacrosse Association.  The 6’3, 195lbs, midfielder has been a dominant player for our Edge program.  He is able to take face-offs, create fast breaks, use his big body to set picks and finish in tight around the net.  “Nosey does it all.  He is one of the most complete midfielders that I’ve ever seen.  His combination of size, defensive ability, overall skill and worth ethic on top of his strong ability in the face off ‘X’ will help him be a contributing factor at Cornell for years to come” said Edge Coach Marc Burton.  Although Brent is a middie on the field, he actually prefers playing goalie when it comes to box.  Brent is currently the starting goalie for the Oakville Buzz Jr.B club.  We would like to wish Brent the best of luck down at Cornell and have no doubt that he will be successful with the Big Red!

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing? Feel free to mention any previous lacrosse teams/clubs
I first began playing box lacrosse at the age of four and began playing field lacrosse at the age of eight. I grew up playing minor lacrosse for the Burlington Chiefs both box and field. Currently I play box lacrosse as a goalie for the Jr. B Oakville Buzz, and field lacrosse for Edge Elite 2015.
Why did you choose to attend Cornell?

I choose to attend Cornell University for a variety of reasons. When I first stepped on campus, it immediately felt like a perfect fit. The balance between the elite academics and the excellent lacrosse program instantly gained my interest. Under Coach DeLuca’s lead, I am confident I will prosper not only as a lacrosse player, but also as an individual.

What are you looking forward to most at Cornell??

I am most looking forward to have the opportunity to play with and against some of the best lacrosse players in the country. I am looking forward to competing to win an Ivy League Championship as well as an NCAA Championship while representing the Big Red.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

Beyond lacrosse, I would like to become a successful businessman by using the skills developed and learned in Cornell’s Applied Economics and Management course. I would also like to spread the game of lacrosse around the world. Particularly in nations filled with poverty, by teaching the sport to under privileged children.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I first joined the Edge Lacrosse program in the summer of my freshman year. Since then, I have had nothing but positive things to say about the program. Edge Lacrosse gives Canadian athletes exposure to American Colleges and Universities and works individually with each athlete to help them reach their goal. I heard about the program, from the tight knit lacrosse community and from my peers who have recently committed to the schools of their dreams through the Edge program.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

First and foremost, make sure you put in the time and effort in the classroom. Secondly, target the schools you would like to attend and reach out to them via email or phone. Do not ever underestimate yourself and cross-schools off your list because you feel you are not good enough. Dream big, work hard and your goals can be accomplished. Remember, the only one holding you back, is you.

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My favorite memory as a lacrosse player would have to be the Gait Cup Tournament. It’s a great team bonding experience, as well as a highly competitive tournament. Also, another great memory I have had while representing the Edge Lacrosse program would be meeting new teammates and gaining friendships that will last a lifetime.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I consider myself to be a player who brings a box lacrosse style to field lacrosse. I like to set picks, rolls, and work off ball. I also like to push fast breaks off the faceoff. Growing up, I admired Paul Rabil. He is a fast, strong midfield who can put the ball in the net.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks.

Thanks to all my friends, family, coaches and teammates for the support. Most importantly, thanks to the Edge program and my parents who have helped turn my dream into a reality.

I began Edge when I was 9 years old. I played for a year and was coached by Joel Johnson. Several years later I began to play for edge again in hopes they do what they do best, recruitment. And that they did. Giving me great exposure and proper direction to go about recruiting. The coaches not only understand you as a player, but on a personal level as well. Really benefitting on and off the field

Future recruitments remember to play your game and listen to your coaches

Congratulations to Matthew Gilray (Edge 2014 Prep) on his commitment to attend Bucknell University in the fall of 2014.  Prior to his commitment to Bucknell, the 6’2 185lbs, long stick middie from Oshawa played with the Edge program for 3 years.  Matt is an extremely gifted defender who has the ability to frustrate the offense and force a turnover.  Gilray began his lacrosse career in Whitby where he developed in their Minor Lacrosse Association.  Matt is currently playing for the Peterborough Lakers Jr. A program while also attending Brewster Academy.  We would like to wish Matthew the best of luck down at Bucknell and have no doubt that he will have great success in the classroom and on the field!

I first began playing lacrosse for the Whitby Warriors in paperweight. I’m currently playing Jr. A for the Peterborough Lakers and attend Brewster Academy.

Why did you choose to attend Bucknell?

I chose Bucknell because it was a perfect fit for me. The lacrosse program there is as good as anyone in the country. The academics posed a challenged for me, which was good. It made me buckle down and become a better student.

What are you looking forward to most at Bucknell?

I’m looking forward to be playing with and against the best players in the country and being apart of a top 20 team.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

Just like any NCAA lacrosse player playing professional lacrosse is the dream, so hopefully with hard work in college I can achieve that goal.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

My experience with edge is something I wouldn’t trade for anything. I joined the program my grade 9 year because my friends played the year before. I met some people that I will never forget. The tournaments that our edge team took part in really gave me the exposure I needed to get recruited.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

I would tell future edge players to be open to anything, the coaches that edge has put in place are incredible and know what they’re talking about. Listen to what they have to say because they’re there to get you recruited and go to the best possible school.

Best/Favorite memory playing with EDGE?

My Favorite memory playing with Edge was the bus rides to tournaments.  This is really when you get to bond with your teammates and become brothers.

Matt Gilray #4

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I would consider myself a transition LSM. I like to take the ball up the field and playing against the other teams best players on the D side. Growing up I looked up to CJ Costabile as a pole that was never afraid to carry the ball up the field and had the hands of a shorty with the pole. I would compare my play to him and I can only hope to have the NCAA career that he did.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks.

Would love to give a shout out to Matt Attwood, Greg Thompson, John Flynn and everyone who helped out with my edge team you all taught me so much.

Also would like to thank John Phillips as the man who was my first lacrosse and taught me all the basics and always helped me succeed and was someone I will always look up to.

And of coarse my parents for being awesome with me through this crazy recruiting process.

I chose to attend Marquette because it was a brand new DI program, the coaching staff was great, and I really liked what they had to offer academically.
What are you looking forward to most at Marquette University??

I’m really looking forward to playing lacrosse at the Division I level while also getting a good education.  I’m also looking forward to meeting new people/teammates.
What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

After school I would like to pursue lacrosse professionally and see where it takes me.  I’ve always though about looking into firefighting after school as well.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I Joined Edge in 2006 and heard about the program through my fiends.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

Work hard, study harder and attend camps!

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

Playing against the Baltimore Crabs.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I would describe my style of play as quick and a feeder.  I like to be creative and I would compare myself to Blain Manning.
Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks.

I would like to thank all my coaches who have helped me out along the way.  Marc Burton with Edge and John Grimes of Mimico.  I would also like to thank my parents for being dedicated to me and my brothers!

Edge Announcement – Jake Cook

Congratulations to Jake Cook (Edge 2013) on his recent commitment to attend Providence College in the fall of 2014!  Cook was with the Edge program for five years before recently enrolling into The Hill Academy.  The lefty midfielder grew up playing lacrosse for the Guelph Minor Lacrosse Association and also won a Gold medal with Team Ontario at the 2011 Nationals.  Cook is currently finishing up his last year at The Hill Academy while playing for the Toronto Beaches Jr. A club in the summer.   We would like to wish Jake the best of luck down at Providence in the classroom and on the field.  We have no doubt that Jake will be a key contributor to a growing program!

Jake Cook

We had a chance to catch up with Jake.

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?

I first began playing lacrosse in Guelph for the Regals in both box and field. I played in Guelph throughout my entire minor career where I was part of a Provincial Championship team and won a gold medal as a member of Team Ontario at the 2011 Nationals. I was also fortunate to play with the 2012 Orangeville Generals U19 championship team. I am currently enrolled at The Hill Academy and have played Junior A for the Toronto Beaches for the last 2 seasons.

Why did you choose to attend Providence College?

I chose to attend Providence College because of my meeting with Coach Gabrielli and his vision for the team and program. The fact that they are building a brand new stadium, film room, dressing room and gym for the men’s lacrosse program shows the school’s commitment to the coaching staff and the lacrosse program. I was also impressed with the campus, community and the reputation of the school. These three things made me feel more comfortable with the decision to become a Friar. Knowing that the coaching staff have all been apart of NCAA championship teams helped reinforce my decision and I am looking forward to play for them and help them try to achieve their goal.

JC1

Jake Cook

What are you looking forward to most at Providence College??

I am looking forward to play for such a great coaching staff and being apart of a growing program while competing at the NCAA level.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

My future ambitions include; representing Canada, playing professional lacrosse in the NLL and MLL, and of becoming a registered physiotherapist.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I first heard about the EDGE program from my box lacrosse coach Tony Carvalho. He introduced me to a winter skills session in Mississauga which was operated by Stu Brown. The next year I played for Serge Bianchin and Cam Bomberry in 2006. Some of my teammates were Quinn and Johnny Powless, Jake Bomberry, Stew Martin, and Brendan Donville. I played with the EDGE program from 2006-2011.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

The best advice that I could give to any future EDGE player is that the recruiting process is a marathon not a sprint. Don’t compare yourself with your teammates and just control the things that you can control; work ethic, discipline, and your studies.

Jake Cook

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My favourite memory playing with EDGE was when our team was privileged enough to play at the half time of the Toronto Nationals versus the Long Island Lizards game. After the game our team got called into the Toronto dressing room and we got to meet the players.

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I am a transitional player that takes pride in gaining possession of loose balls and playing strong defense. Having played short stick middie I enjoy being involved in the offensive part of the game with my longstick and pushing transition. The player that I look up to is Brodie Merrill. I have been very fortunate to have played for Brodie at The Hill Academy for the past 2 years. My coaches have said that I have similar traits on the field to EDGE and Cornell Alumni Jason Noble.

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks

I want to thank my parents and family for always being there and supporting me throughout my lacrosse career. Without having my family’s support I would not be where I am today. I also want to thank all the coaches who I played for over the years. I am excited  for this upcoming year at The Hill Academy and looking forward to experiencing

Edge Announcement – Adrian Torok-Orban

Congratulations to Adrian Torok-Orban (Edge 2014) on his recent commitment to attend Robert Morris University in the fall of 2014.  Adrian has been with the edge program for two years now and has grown into an exceptional attackman for our program.  Standing at 6’0, 210lbs, the Toronto, Ontario native has a knack for losing his defender off ball and finish in-tight.  Edge 2014 head coach Marc Burton has this to say “Adrian is great at what he does.  He’s a prolific goal scorer that has a great lacrosse IQ.  Adrian has a shot that can’t be stopped because it can’t often be seen by goalies.  He will make a great goal scorer at the college level and should add to an already potent RMU offense”. Torok-Orban began playing lacrosse in 2006 with the Toronto Stars Minor Lacrosse Association before getting his release to go play with the Toronto Beaches.  Adrian is currently playing with St. Michaels College based out of Toronto.  We would like to wish Adrian the best of luck down at RMU, in the class room and on the field.  We have no doubt that Adrian will be a key contributer to their offense.

We had a chance to catch up with Adrian

1. Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing? Feel free to mention any previous lacrosse teams/club

I first began playing lacrosse in 2006 with the Toronto Stars where I played both house league and rep. In 2012, I was granted a release to play for the Toronto Beaches Midget rep team and this year I played for the Beaches Intermediate team and was also an AP for the Jr.A Beaches. I began playing field lacrosse when I attended St. Michael’s College School in grade 9, and began playing for Edge in the fall of my Grade 10 year.

2. Why did you choose to attend RMU?

I chose to attend Robert Morris University because they have an internationally accredited business program with the option of a 5 year MBA which I look forward to enrolling in. RMU has relatively small class sizes and I feel that the business program of study gives me the best opportunity to learn and to further my education while playing elite lacrosse with a great group of guys and under great coaching staff.

3. What are you looking forward to most at RMU??

I am most looking forward to obtaining a great education while playing Division I which has been a dream/goal of mine since I began playing field lacrosse.

4. What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

Beyond playing in the NCAA I would like to find a good job, and stay a part of the game for as long as I can, whether it be playing or coaching at a higher level. Lacrosse has done a lot for me and I would like to continue that and give back to the sport as it has become a large part of who I am.

5. Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

When I began playing field lacrosse at St. Mike’s many of the players were already apart of the Edge program and from there, I was encouraged/suggested that I should try out. Since the time I joined in the fall of 2011 I have had nothing but great things to say about the program. From the insight on the recruitment process to the exposure and experience in playing against some of the top teams in the U.S, it is no wonder why Edge is one of the top travel teams in Canada.

6. What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

For any future players looking to take the next step into the NCAA, two pieces of advice that I have are:

1) Maintain good academics. When I began high school in grade 9 I wasn’t planning on going to the NCAA let alone even playing field lacrosse at the time. As I took a liking to the sport and realized that playing in the NCAA was an option that was present, I had to bear down and apply myself academically as I soon realized the importance of how much more marketable you are to college coaches when you have the marks to back up your level of play.

2) Constantly have your stick in your hand. Stick skills are a very important part of the game and the more you hit the wall and shoot around, the better off you’ll be.

Untitled1

Adrian Torok-Orban with St. Michaels College

7. Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

My best memory of playing with Edge is when we had two tournaments back to back, first one was the “UPLax” tournament in Maryland and then the second one was the “Best of the Beach” in New Jersey. Although the games didn’t go all that well, the time spent with the guys on the team and the friends that I made from those two tournaments made it the best Edge experience I’ve had.

8. Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

I am a lefty finisher with pretty good hands and a pretty good shot. I see the field well and don’t mind making an extra pass to someone if they are in a better position than I am. Growing up I watched Garrett Billings and John Grant Jr. and tried to emulate their same style of play.

9. Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks, and any additional details that you would like.

First and foremost, I’d like to thank my parents and my grandparents for all of their time and effort that they’ve put in, as without them, none of this would have been possible.

I would also like to thank Edge Lacrosse for the experience of playing at such an elite level. Specifically, Adam, Alan, Marc, and Stu for the phenomenal help, guidance, and coaching in which I have received over my short period with the program.

I would like to thank my many coaches over the years. From the Coaches at St. Mike’s: Coach Dineley, Coach Frescura, Coach Lance, and Coach Pagano. To the Coaches at the Beaches Rep: Coach Kolb, Coach Olimpo and Jr. A Beaches: Coach Codd and Coach Thomson. Thank you for all of your time and dedication for it is you who have helped mould me into the player that I am.

And last but most certainly not least, I would like to give special thanks to my first Coach Kyl Davis. It is because of you that I am playing the sport that I have come to love and without your guidance and coaching in my early years none of this would have been possible.

Luke’s Highlights

We had a chance to catch up with Luke

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing? Feel free to mention any previous lacrosse teams/clubs

“I began playing box lacrosse at the age of 7 for the Cambridge Minor Lacrosse Association and took up field lacrosse when I was 11 for Guelph Minor Field Lacrosse. Right now I am enrolled at Saint Benedict’s Catholic Secondary School and I play for the Guelph Regals Jr.B box lacrosse team. I played minor field lacrosse in Guelph, Kitchener and Centre Wellington”

Why did you choose to attend Bellarmine?

“I chose to attend Bellarmine because the size of the school offers me the best opportunity to learn and educate myself as a student because of the small class sizes. In addition to education I chose Bellarmine because of the quality of lacrosse. With the amazing coaching staff I found that I enjoyed the direction they were taking the team and I definitely wanted to be a part of the movement coach Burns has already gotten started on”

What are you looking forward to most at Bellarmine??

“I’m really looking forward to being able to take environmental studies which is something I’ve always been interested in. As well as play and compete at the division 1 level which has been a very important goal to me for quite some time now”

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

“Beyond playing in the NCAA I wish to be able to have a family that I can enjoy the rest of my life with, have a job that I’m happy with and continue to play lacrosse as long as I possibly can”

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

“My experience with the EDGE program has been an amazing ride so far, I started playing for EDGE in 2010, my grade 9 year. I heard about the program just by competing against some guys who play for EDGE, and I noticed that most of the guys were pretty talented ball players and I thought if they could do it, then I could do it. So I decided to try out for the team and haven’t looked back since”

lh

Luke Henderson

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

“My advice for future EDGE players would be, first, make sure you have the necessary grades because that is a huge part of the recruitment process. Second, I would say to forget about who’s on the sidelines watching you play. just empty the tank each game and good things will happen

Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

“My best memory with the EDGE program was in my sophomore year in the Gettysburg, Gait Cup Tournament. We played in some pretty heated games which made for great, fierce competition. Although we lost in the semi’s, hanging out with the boys in the dorms made for a great time, that was a lot of fun”

Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

“I’m a player who likes to push odd-man situations and play a quick passing game. I like pushing the ball, drawing the first slide and making a pass to the open guy to create a scoring opportunity, I feel I do a good job of seeing the field and creating transition opportunities by pushing the ball. I really looked up to Kyle Harrison growing up, he was just the flashiest player I’ve ever seen and his ability to score goals and take over a lacrosse game is something else”

Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks, and any additional details that you would like included

“I would really like to thank my parents for the tremendous amount of work they’ve put into my lacrosse career thus far, it means everything to me.

I want to thank Marc Burton and Adam Lukanchoff for being great coaches, always kept the teams spirits high and made playing for EDGE a lot of fun for me.
I would also like to thank all past and current teammates for being a great group of guys, I’ve made a lot of good buddies through EDGE lacrosse and I hope the friendships last even when we compete against each other in the future. “

Congratulations to Mitch Wales (Edge 2014) on his recent commitment to attend Robert Morris University in the fall of 2014!  Mitch has been with the Edge program for 6 years now and has really grown into an excellent take-away defender with the ability to transition the ball up field into the offensive zone.  The Burlington, Ontario Native began playing lacrosse at the age of 4 in the Burlington Minor Lacrosse Association before switching over to play with the Oakville Hawks.  The 6’3, 190lbs, defender just finished up his rookie season with the Oakville Buzz Jr.B club where he had an exceptional rookie season posting 15 goals and 29 assists for 44 points in just 20 games.  We had a chance to speak with Coach Marc Burton about Mitch’s commitment and he stated “Mitch is one of the most hardworking and coachable young men I’ve had the privilege of coaching.  He is going to be a great addition to the RMU defense”.  We couldn’t agree more and would like to wish Mitch the best of luck at RMU, in the classroom and on the field.  We have no doubt that Mitch will continue to excel and become a key contributer.

Congratulations to Connor Kearnan (Edge 2014) on his recent commitment to attend St. Joseph’s University! Kearnan began his lacrosse career at the age of six playing in the Clarington Minor Lacrosse Association.  The Courtice, Ontario native is currently enrolled at St. Stephen’s secondary school and is playing for their varsity program.  In the summer the 5’9, 170-pound attackman is a key contributor for our Edge program while also in the Junior B loop for the Clarington Green Gaels.  After speaking with Edge Coach, Marc Burton about Kearnan’s recent commitment he stated “Connor is one of the most talented players I have ever coached.  He has a natural skill set that is comparable to few.  His ability to find the back of the net while being covered is incredible.  Connor is also a great team player and as coachable as any of our players.  St. Joseph’s definitely got a high profile player!”.  We would like to wish Connor the best of luck at St. Joseph’s and have no doubt he will continue to excel and become a instrumental player for their program.

Connor Kearnan

We had a chance to catch up with Connor and his experience with Edge.

1. Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing? Feel free to mention any previous lacrosse teams/clubs.

I first began playing lacrosse for Clarington Minor Lacrosse at 6 yrs old.. Presently I am enrolled at St. Stephen’s secondary where I play on the Varsity team. My hope is to continue playing box lacrosse for the Clarington Green Gaels JR. B’s.

2. Why did you choose to attend  SJU?

I chose to attend St. Joseph’s because of the coaching staff and the atmosphere. I loved  the direction the coaches are planning on taking the team and with the role they see me contributing in. The team has a good group of guys and they seemed more like a family then a lacrosse team, plus, the campus was beautiful. There was really nothing I didn’t like about SJU

3. What are you looking forward to most at SJU??

The thing I’m looking forward to most at SJU is definitely being able to combine a great education with lacrosse. Coach Wray is not only the coach of SJU but also of Team Canada, so, I am really hoping to learn from him and elevate my game even more.

4. What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

To be successful, happy, stay close with my family and friends and hopefully play lacrosse for years to come.  I really hope to one day be a coach myself, maybe even in the NCAA.

CK

Connor Kearnan

5. Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

I joined EDGE just recently, in the fall of 2012. I had always played hockey but had a dream of playing Division 1 lacrosse so I had to make the choice. This brought me to the EDGE tryouts in hopes of getting noticed. I had heard about EDGE my whole lacrosse career, and basically knew when you were playing against someone with an EDGE helmet you needed to keep an eye on them because you knew they’d be good.

6. What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?

“Don’t worry about the name of the school. Don’t make yourself fit the school, make sure the school fits you. Consider all aspects such as;the size of the school, location, courses, coaches, and maybe even your role. You are going to be there for 4 years or more, might as well enjoy it!”

7. Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?

“Best memory was going to Florida with the EDGE 2015’s for the Dick’s Tournament with Coach Marc and Coach Stu, as well as the UPLax tournament with Coach Adam and Coach Marc because it was my first tournament as an EDGE player. These tourneys provided me with the opportunity to play great lacrosse but also, got to meet a bunch of guys that are true beauties!.”

Connor-Kearnan

Adrenaline Great Lakes Show Case

8. Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

“I would describe myself as an all around offensive player. I can score, set up plays, get loose balls, and have good hands. I looked up to my dad growing up because he was the whole reason I got into lacrosse, and he was a laxer himself in the day. Now, I’m not sure who I would compare myself to but I do know who I want to be, I would love to be that guy that other teams worry about when they are on the field.”

9. Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks, and any additional details that you would like included in the story

“I’d like to give a shoutout to;

1) My family for supporting me and believing in me all these years as well as for all their time and money they put in.

2) The TCB’s (tennis court boys), a great group of buddies who spent endless hours during spring, summer and fall practicing on the tennis courts.

3) All my teammates throughout all the years

4) Coach Hoar for teaching me all the fundamentals, Coach Steve for expanding on my lacrosse skills, Coach Marc and Adam for believing in me, and Coach Stu for helping me through the recruiting process.

5) Coach Derek for stepping up and taking the Midget 1 gaels to a summer games bronze medal.

6) Coach Terry for all the help he’s given me on the lacrosse field, “stick up”.”

Congratulations to Ryan Johnston (Edge 2013) on his recent commitment to attend Boston University this fall!  The 6’0, 195lbs, Attackman has been with the Edge program for 5 years now and has been a key contributor offensively for our 2013 squad.  Johnston, is a very balanced midfielder who has the ability to finish in tight as well as creating space and finding the open guy for a goal.  The Elora Native is also currently enrolled at The Hill Academy and playing Jr.B for the Elora Mohawks.  We would like to wish Ryan the best of luck at Boston University and have no doubt that he will be a key contributer in their brand new D-I program!
Ryan5
We had a chance to catch up with Ryan about his experience with Edge and what lies ahead for him in the future.
1. Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing? Feel free to mention any previous lacrosse teams/clubs
“I began playing Lacrosse in my home town of Elora at the age of two. I was introduced to the game by my father Dave, who has been one of my biggest inspirations thus far in my career. I am currently enrolled at The Hill Academy, A private school for Student-Athletes ran by the Merrill Family. I am also a member of the Elora Mohawks Jr. B team, Orangeville Generals U19 and Edge Prep”
2. Why did you choose to attend Boston University?
“I chose to attend Boston University because it was the best fit both academically and athletically. Regarded as one of the top universities in the world, I felt that I could not find a better place to pursue my academic future. I was also sold on being a part of building a new program like BU and being on the inaugural Mens DI Lacrosse team. In my opinion I couldn’t find a better combination of both academics and athletics. The campus and the city itself was awesome and I cant wait to get started”
3. What are you looking forward to most at Boston University?
“Aside from the overall University experience, I am looking forward to being apart of something special, the first DI team at Boston U. I think that it will be very beneficial for me learning to deal with both the adversity and success it brings”

The Hill Academy

4. What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?
“Beyond NCAA Lacrosse, I want to go into the business field. I am very interested in what it has to offer. I also want to play Lacrosse as long as I can whether it be Professional or Rec League. I don’t think there will ever be a time where I am fully away from the game”
5. Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?
“I began playing with the Edge program in grade 7(I am now a senior). I played on the U14 team Coached by Greg Thompson. Greg was instrumental in my field career in assisting me to where I am now and is an individual that I owe a lot to for what he has done for me. I played two seasons with the U14 team with some of my best friends still to this day. We are a very tight knit group that even outside of Lacrosse is very close regardless of distance. Since then I have played with the same group of guys up until this past season with the Edge Prep team also coached by Greg Thompson along with Jon Flynn and Dave Johnston”
6. What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?
“As far as advice goes for those coming through the program, I urge you to stay calm and let the opportunity come to you. Be aggressive in pursuing the schools you are interested when the time comes, but don’t think it is a big rush. In the end you will find the right fit. Recruiting nowadays is crazy, kids as young as tenth grade are making college commitments. Do not feel rushed or disadvantaged by any means and control your controllables.  When the time is right there is a right fit for everyone it just may not come right away. If there is one thing I learned throughout my recruiting process it is to stay focused on Lacrosse and school, and don’t lose hope because it will come”
Ryan2
7. Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?
“My favourite memories as an Edge Member would be the road trips. Yes we had a tone of fun beating up on quality American teams that were often 2-3 years older than us, but it is the times on the bus and in the hotel rooms with my teammates that I will never forget”
8. Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?
“I see myself as more of a feeder and a finisher on the Lacrosse field. I am not the kind of guy who will wow you with fancy stick tricks or split dodges but more the guy who gets the job done.  I have always looked up to the Gaits but recently it has been my coach Merrick Thomson. He has some of the smoothest hands I have ever seen and just knows how to score. In terms of leadership I look up to my Head Coach Brodie Merrill. He is one of the best leaders and most influential people I have ever had the privilege of being around. Having his advice daily at The Hill Academy has really pushed me to be the best I can be in all aspects of life”
9. Feel free to include any shout-outs, special thanks, and any additional details that you would like included in the story (parents names, high school attended, credit to any coaches, etc)
“I would like to personally thank the Edge Program, The Hill Academy, and my friends and family for everything they have done for me thus far. It has been an amazing journey so far and I cant wait to see where it takes me after my career at Boston University”

Congratulations to Spencer Secord (Edge 2015) on his recent commitment to attend Georgetown University! The American native, Secord, grew up playing field lacrosse in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to Canada at the age of 13. While in Canada, Secord received the opportunity to experience playing box lacrosse for the Toronto Beaches while developing new areas of his game. Secord is currently playing for Upper Canada College and will be attending Culver Academy for his junior and senior year of high school. Secord has become a terrific two way midfielder for our Edge program and uses his speed and size to his advantage at both ends of the field. We would like to wish Spencer the best of luck down at Georgetown both in the classroom and on the field. We have no doubt that Spencer will continue to develop and become a dangerous midfielder for their program! You can view one of Spencer’s highlight videos here – http://youtu.be/YrvzuJOfrHs

SS

Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?
SS- I began playing lacrosse in the 5th grade in Atlanta, Georgia. I moved to Canada three years ago when I was 13 and picked up box lacrosse for the first time playing for the Toronto Beaches. I currently play for Upper Canada College and will be going to Culver Academy for my junior and senior year of high school where many of the  other Edge players have gone. For the last two years I have played on the Edge 2015 team, and playing for Edge was how I was scouted in the U.S.

Why did you choose to attend Georgetown?
SS – I chose Georgetown because I wanted to play lacrosse at the highest level and get a great education at the same time. Washington DC is a great city to go to University and I get the chance to play for some of the best coaches in the NCAA.

What are you looking forward to most at Georgetown?
SS – I’m looking forward to playing for a great lacrosse team that plays to win. Being surrounded by players that want to win as much as I do and have the same goals is important to me.

What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?

SS – I hope to get a great education at Georgetown’s McDonough Business School and enter the business world. I also hope that lacrosse becomes an Olympic sport and I get a chance to be a part of that experience.

Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?

SS – This is my second year playing for Edge and I have really enjoyed the time I’ve been part of it. I heard about Edge through my school teammates who play on my team now. The tournaments we play in give all the players a great chance to get recruited as well as playing the best competition in the States.

What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?
SS – Keep your grades up because they are important, you never know where you will end up so don’t close any doors, its best to keep as many options open as possible. Always play at the top of your game because you never know who’s watching.
Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?
SS – Every Edge tournament I have been to is memorable to me but the Dick’s Tournament of Champions was one that I remember the most because it was a great venue, we made it to the finals, and it was just for fun.
Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?

SS – I am a two way middie, I rely on my speed and size to make things happen on the field. I think that I am best in transition and so if I was to compare myself to other players it would be someone like Jordan Hall. One of my favourite players, Mark Matthews, is also an Edge alumni.

Any shout-outs, special thanks?
SS – I had two great coaches at Edge, Coach Follows and Coach Brown. Through the heavy recruiting period this winter Coach Brown worked very hard on my behalf. I also want to thank my parents for taking me to all those practices and tournaments over the years and being so supportive, particularly my Dad who has really helped me through the recruiting process.
