Congratulations to Matthew Gaudet (Edge 2015/16) on his recent commitment to attend Syracuse University in the fall of 2016! The 6’1, 195lbs mid/attackman has been with the Edge program for 4 years now and has developed into a dominant all around player. “Gaudet is a strong powerful player that can either go around you or through you. Matthew possesses a heavy midrange shot with the skill set to either be a two way middie or an attackman” Said Edge 2015 Head Coach Adam Gardner. Gaudet began his lacrosse career at the age of 4 playing in the Hamilton Minor Lacrosse Association. Gaudet is currently enrolled at Salisbury Prep School and was drafted first overall by the Six Nations Arrows Jr.A squad this year. We would like to wish Matthew the best of luck at Syracuse both in the classroom and on the field! We have no doubt that he will continue to develop and succeed at the DI level.

We had a chance to catch up with Matt
Where did you first begin playing lacrosse? Where are you currently enrolled/playing?
I first began playing lacrosse with the Hamilton Lacrosse Association at the age of 4. I am currently enrolled at Salisbury School playing with the Varsity lacrosse team and will be playing with Sweet Lax 2016 this summer. I was a member of the EDGE Elite 2015/2016 team and most recently the CNY Roadhawks 2015 team.
Why did you choose to attend Syracuse?
I chose to attend Syracuse based on the coaching staff. The coaching staff is exceptional, Coach Desko along with his staff really know they’re stuff. Not just that, but they’re really great people too. Another thing that helped with my selection is the communications and media program they offer, which is one of the best in the country. As well, the athletic facilities and the privileges that Syracuse has to offer their lacrosse players are out of this world. Lastly, it’s close to home and it’s always nice to be close to where you came from.
What are you looking forward to most at Syracuse??
I’m really looking forward to being a part of one of the best lacrosse programs in the country. It will really up my knowledge on the game and help me improve on every aspect necessary. I’m also really excited to just be an Orangemen and experience everything that Syracuse has to offer.
What are your future ambitions beyond NCAA lax?
My future ambitions beyond college lacrosse is to become a professional lacrosse player, in either or both box and field. I also plan to become a lacrosse coach and give back to others what my coaches have taught me about this incredible game which has gotten me to where I am today.
Can you provide some insight into your experience with EDGE, when did you join the program? How did you hear about the program?
My experience with EDGE was a really fun time and extremely helpful on improving my athletics and academics. The program really benefited me in the recruiting process and pushed to make sure colleges would take an interest in me. EDGE helped me gain a lot of knowledge and skills that I still acquire today, on and off the field. It really teaches you how to become a gentlemen. I heard about the program from former coach Pete Follows who really saw a future in the game for me and knew that EDGE would help just that.
What advice do you have for any future EDGE players about the recruitment process?
My advice is to always do your very best on and off the field, because most colleges won’t take a second look if you’re doing poorly in the classroom. You should always contact schools and inform them the tournaments and showcases you’ll be attending and if they’re there, I’m sure they’ll have a look at you. Always keep in contact with schools and keep your options open to ANY possibilities. If one school doesn’t work out, keep your head up and move on. Everybody fails before they achieve success.
Best/Favourite memory playing with EDGE?
My favourite memory playing with EDGE would have to be the Dick’s Tournament of Champions where we finished in 2nd place. It was a well ran tournament with great people and very talented players too.
Describe the type of lacrosse player you are, who did you look up to growing up? Who would you compare yourself to now?
I’d describe myself as an unselfish and extremely hardworking player who always works to be the best. I’d say I’m a strong dodger who has the ability to see the back of the net or see the open man for a nice pass. Growing up, I looked up to Cameron Mann, the very talented former EDGE player who currently plays for the Colorado Mammoth. I would compare myself to Cody Jamieson of the Rochester Knighthawks because he may not be the strongest or the fastest, but with hard work he manages to get it done, which I think is very similar to myself.

I’d like to thank Pete Follows for believing in me and getting me back into competitive lacrosse, the EDGE lacrosse program and everything behind the scenes. I really wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for him.
I’d like to thank my Roadhawks coaches Mike Stagnitta and Kristy Kimball in the recruiting process and a big one, my commitment to Syracuse. Couldn’t have done it without their help.

Lastly, my family. For all the support they’ve given me and the time and money spent going to all these lacrosse events as well as any other event I’ve taken part in. They’ve been there every step of the way in this journey called life and I know they will continue to do so.
